Best Time To Visit Kinnaur
Kinnaur can be visited most of the year round, except the peak winter months when Sangla and Chitkul are not so easily accessible.
July–September: Lush green valleys, occasional monsoon landslides slow down the Karcham stretch.
October–November: Clear skies, harvest time and the best light for photography.

Kinnaur is a border district, so please carry a government issued photo ID at all times – it may be checked at police posts beyond Karcham even though no special permit is required for Indian nationals on this route.
Up to Karcham the roads are good and mostly metalled, beyond Karcham towards Sangla, Chitkul and Kalpa they narrow into single-lane mountain roads. Best time to travel is March to November. Heavy snow can shut the Sangla–Chitkul stretch from December to February.
Nights in Chitkul and Kalpa can get cold even in summer, so pack warm layers regardless of when you travel.

Road Conditions
The stretch between Shimla and Rampur and Sarahan is a well maintained hilly highway. Beyond Karcham to Sangla, Chitkul and Kalpa, the roads narrow down to single-lane mountain roads with a rough patch here and there especially after the monsoon rains.

The tour starts and ends in Shimla which is well connected by road from Chandigarh and Delhi. If you are coming from Chandigarh or Delhi, we will arrange a tailor-made pickup so the loop starts wherever is most convenient for you.

The heights are moderate and generally not uncomfortable, but nights at Chitkul and Kalpa can be cold so warm layers are recommended, even in summer.
Permits Required
This route does not cross the restricted zone of Spiti so you don’t need an Inner Line Permit. Note: As this is a border district, there are checkposts sometimes, so carry a valid government issued photo ID for the entire journey.
